Introduction to Zen Buddhism Class @ Kali Yoga

Introduction to Zen Buddhism Class


This 3-part class will take place on three consecutive Sunday afternoons in October 2023, at Kali Yoga studio in Rockford, Michigan.  The class will provide participants with an introduction to the origins and development of Buddhism and Zen in Asia; the transmission of Zen to the West; Zen meditation technique; meditation hall etiquette; Buddhist philosophy and doctrines; key scriptures; fundamental ethical precepts; and guidelines for maturing in the practice.  Online resources will also be available for participants.

To register, please complete our Event Registration Form by no later than September 29.  If you are unable to pay the requested $60, please request a scholarship on the registration form.

Fusatsu (Renewal of Vows Ceremony)

The gassho mudra.In accordance with the millennia-old tradition, Great Wave performs Fusatsu, the renewal of vows ceremony, during the regular weekly meditation meeting that falls closest to the full moon.  Fusatsu is a time for us to reflect on how we have maintained the 16 Bodhisattva Precepts and is ordinarily preceded by a Day of Reflection.

Anyone may participate either in person or via Zoom, regardless of background or membership status.  If participating in person, you must have received an orientation to Great Wave and have completed registration for Weekly In-Person Zazen Meetings.

If participating via Zoom, you must have received an orientation to Zen practice and will need to download a copy of the ceremony.  Further guidance may be provided by the Ino (chant leader) during the ceremony.

Tea Ceremony at Myogenji @ Myogenji

Tea Ceremony with Dr. Yasu Ikuma

This special event will be led by Dr. Yasu Ikuma, who will conduct, and provide instruction in, the Japanese art of the tea ceremony.

This centuries-old, Zen-influenced tradition focuses on the meditative practice of making and sharing tea.

Jan 26 – 28 Beginner’s Mind Sesshin

To raise the Bodhi mind is to take the first step along the Zen path.

This three-day retreat will offer opportunities for zazen, liturgy practice, a teisho by Gendo Roshi, and dokusan (private instruction).  Everyone, regardless of experience, is encouraged to participate in this sesshin, during which we will honor the birth of Soto Zen’s founder Eihei Dogen Zenji.   Vegetarian meals are included.

As always, you may participate full- or part-time and either in-person or via Zoom.  Also, please note that no one will be turned away because of inability to pay the requested fee.

To participate, please complete our Event Registration Form by no later than January 20.  Your timely registration and payment allow us to plan a menu and make other arrangements.
