Great Wave is very pleased to offer a 3-hour workshop in ikebana, the centuries-old, Zen-influenced art of Japanese flower arranging, from 1:00 – 4:00, Saturday, May 20, at the Ludington Senior Citizen Center.  This workshop is open to everyone of all ages and regardless of experience with Zen.  All necessary tools and materials for the workshop will be provided.

This workshop will feature a live demonstration of two ikebana styles (shoka and moribana), after which participants will have an opportunity to create their own arrangements under the guidance of Mary Melvin, Sensei, from the Traverse City chapter of Ikebana International. Each participant will take home a beautiful flower arrangement.

As this workshop will provide one-on-one instruction, participation is limited to 12.  We, therefore, urge you to complete our Event Registration Form as soon as possible.

Mary Melvin
Mary Melvin has been studying ikebana since 2013.

Mary Melvin began her exploration of ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging in 2013 when she was invited by a friend to join the Traverse City chapter of the Ikebana International. Shortly thereafter, she became the President of the chapter, learning a great deal about ikebana and Japanese culture. In 2016, she began taking ikebana lessons at the Naples, Florida Ikenobo School of ikebana and has been awarded the Kakan (Level 10) diploma for her achievements. She is currently studying for the next level (Kako) diploma, which she expects to attain in 2024. As one who has always appreciated the beauty of trees, bushes, shrubs, and flowers, Melvin especially enjoys the ways in which the introspective aspects of the ikebana tradition allow one to bring out the inherent quality and inner beauty of floral materials.
